Spinal cord injury can lead to back pain. Nearly everyone at some point has back pain that interferes with work, routine daily activities, or recreational activity. The type of depression that often accompanies chronic pain is referred to as major depression or clinical depression. This type of depression goes beyond what would be considered normal depression. The symptoms of a major depression from a spinal cord injury may include: overall mood change with feelings of sadness and/or hopelessness; extreme weight loss or weight gain; sleeping too much or too little; loss of interest in enjoyment of life; feeling of worthless; problems with concentration or memory; considering suicide or wanting to be dead.

Major depression is thought to be four times greater in people with chronic back pain than in the general population.

There are several ways to help yourself feel better after a spinal cord injury:

Exercise is good for your mood and your spine. Check with your doctor first, but low impact exercise, like walking or swimming, is good. Some people find that yoga relaxes them and builds strength and flexibility. But you want to move and breathe – to start, your goal should be to engage in 30 minutes of gentle exercise each day.

Lose weight. Extra weight puts strain on your spine. Stop smoking – which decreases blood supply and makes it harder to breathe.

Practice good posture. If you work at a desk, make sure it fits you comfortably. Be careful carrying heavy objects

Get good sleep. Sleep is essential for our bodies and how and where we sleep can make all the difference. If you are having trouble sleeping or find that you wake in the morning more tired than when you went to bed, you may need to take a good look at where and how you sleep. A good mattress allows you to maintain the same natural spinal alignment that you have when standing. When your body is allowed to rest in its natural position, muscles are relaxed and sleep is more refreshing.
