Spinal cord injury can lead to back pain. Nearly everyone at some point
has back pain that interferes with work, routine daily activities, or
recreational activity. Americans spend at least $50 billion each year
to combat low back pain, the most common cause of job-related disability
and a leading contributor to missed work. Back pain is the second most
common neurological ailment in the United States — only headaches
are more common. Fortunately, most occurrences of low back pain go away
within a few days. Others take much longer to resolve or may be a symptom
of a more serious condition.
Acute or short-term low back pain generally lasts from a few days to a
few weeks. Most acute back pain is mechanical in nature — the result
of trauma to the lower back or a disorder such as arthritis. Pain from
trauma may be caused by a sports injury, work around the house or in the
garden, or a sudden jolt such as a
car accident,
construction site accident, or other stress on spinal bones and tissues. Symptoms may range from
muscle ache to shooting or stabbing pain, limited flexibility and/or range
of motion, or an inability to stand straight. Occasionally, pain felt
in one part of the body may “radiate” from a disorder or injury
elsewhere in the body. Some acute pain syndromes can become more serious
if left untreated.
Not talked about nearly enough is depression, that can come with pain that
doesn’t go away. Back pain that doesn’t stop is known as “chronic”
back pain, as opposed to “acute” back pain, which can also
be from overuse or an accident, but goes away in a week or two with rest
and over-the-counter medication. The type of depression that often accompanies
chronic pain is referred to as major depression or clinical depression.
This type of depression goes beyond what would be considered normal depression.
The symptoms of a major depression from a spinal cord injury may include:
overall mood change with feelings of sadness and/or hopelessness; extreme
weight loss or weight gain; sleeping too much or too little; loss of interest
in enjoyment of life; feeling of worthless; problems with concentration
or memory; considering suicide or wanting to be dead.
Major depression is thought to be four times greater in people with chronic
back pain than in the general population.
There are several ways to help yourself feel better after a spinal cord injury:
Exercise is good for your mood and your spine. Check with your doctor first, but
low impact exercise, like walking or swimming, is good. Some people find
that yoga relaxes them and builds strength and flexibility. But you want
to move and breathe – to start, your goal should be to engage in
30 minutes of gentle exercise each day.
Lose weight. Extra weight puts strain on your spine. Stop smoking – which decreases
blood supply and makes it harder to breathe.
Practice good posture. If you work at a desk, make sure it fits you comfortably. Be careful
carrying heavy objects
Get good sleep. Sleep is essential for our bodies and how and where we sleep can make
all the difference. If you are having trouble sleeping or find that you
wake in the morning more tired than when you went to bed, you may need
to take a good look at where and how you sleep. A good mattress allows
you to maintain the same natural spinal alignment that you have when standing.
When your body is allowed to rest in its natural position, muscles are
relaxed and sleep is more refreshing.
While you may not be able to avoid some occasional back pain, keeping your back healthy will go a long way to keeping you in good shape.
Our law firm is headquartered in Forest Hills, New York, and we will gladly assist back or lumbar injury, or neck or cervical injury victims in the entire New York metropolitan area. We prosecute cases in all five boroughs, plus Long Island (Nassau/Suffolk) and Westchester. We do not represent corporations or insurance companies - so we have no conflict of interest in taking on any defendant or negotiating a neck injury settlement, back injury settlement or any kind of a soft tissue injury case or soft tissue injury settlement.
Because the neck and back are fairly complex, structurally speaking, they can be easy to damage in an accident. A neck or back (spinal cord) injury can have serious consequences. Nerve damage to your spine can affect your arms or legs. You may have difficulty walking, weakness in your hands, shooting pains, burning or tingling, or other symptoms known as radicular pain or radiculopathy.
To maximize your recovery you need a lawyer and law firm that understands the medicine, as well as your legal rights. A soft tissue injury claim, soft tissue injury lawsuit, or soft tissue injury settlement can be overwhelming - you only get one chance when you or a loved one needs an experienced injury lawyer.
