Though far from typical, firework shows can cause serious injuries for spectators on 4th of July—even if these displays are legal. Many people were watching a legal fireworks display Wednesday night at Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, New York. A defective rocket went astray and injured 6 people. All of them sustained minor injuries and were sent to the hospital and soon released. These injuries could easily have been worse had it not been for an intervening fence that took some of the initial impact.
While watching fireworks is usually safe entertainment, this was not the only accident across the nation for Independence Day. In Ojai, California, one of the operators sustained severe injuries to the face and left arm and leg, causing the high school fireworks display to come to an early close. Another firework accident occurred in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and in Montana the ship launching fireworks caught fire just as the finale started. The biggest firework accident occurred in Simi Valley, California, as rockets fell sideways before launching, injuring 39 people. Families sitting a legal distance away from the fireworks were hit by shrapnel and sustained burns, but as of Friday night, only three people were kept hospitalized. The cause of this accident is still under investigation.
Firework accidents do occur every year, inflicting painful burn injuries and sending shrapnel into the air, which can cause serious injuries to the eyes and head, even breaking bones. Especially if these injuries are due to negligence on the part of the venue, operators, or manufacturers, victims of these accidents can be owed compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and perhaps lost wages.
